Law Society consults on updates to the Conveyancing Protocol

The Law Society has launched a consultation on proposed updates to its Conveyancing Protocol, reflecting changes in residential conveyancing since the current edition was published in 2019.

The proposals recognise the growing use of digital identity checks, document exchange, case management systems and lender portals. They also cover client communication, fraud prevention, cyber security and developments in leasehold and commonhold transactions.

Kevin Horlock, CEO of the Legal Software Suppliers Association (LSSA), says:

“In the last seven years, digitalisation has been at the heart of developments in the conveyancing process. These have focused largely on incorporating digital ID and AML checks, together with embracing digital document exchange, online case-management systems and embedded online portals for lenders.

“The review spotlights two particularly important developments: first, the Land Registry’s continuing digital transformation and, second, addressing the challenges stemming from the increasing use of technology, such as managing indiscriminate supplementary enquiries generated by AI.”

The Law Society is inviting feedback from conveyancers and other stakeholders involved in residential property transactions. The consultation closes on Thursday 14 January 2027.
